Every step in a rotary tumbler runs for about a week, but the calendar is only a guide. The stones tell you when they’re ready. Here’s how to check before you move on to the next grit.
Rinse one stone and let it dry
Wet stones always look finished. Pull out a few, rinse them clean and let them dry completely, then look at them under good light.
What “done” looks like
- Coarse grind: no pits, cracks or sharp edges left. Shape is what you want to keep.
- Medium/fine: an even, matte surface with no visible scratches.
- Pre-polish: a soft satin sheen when dry.
- Polish: a glassy shine that stays after the stone dries.
If a stone isn’t there yet, give it another week at the same step with fresh grit. Moving on too early is the most common reason for hazy results. For the full schedule, read our four-step guide.
